The world is noisy. At every turn, we are bombarded – our attention distracted by countless demands. Rarely do we appreciate the gift silence brings to our souls.

From emails to music, to podcasts, phone calls, and commercials, our days are filled with a lot of noise.

It is not that any of these things are bad. They simply do not provide the moments of quiet our souls need.

And we are so conditioned to the noise that silence is often unsettling.

Something seems missing if the radio or television is not playing while we drive to work or sit at home.

The noise pacifies us. And in fact, it does lull our souls into a type of sleep. The constant distraction keeps our souls from waking up.

Silence is our antidote. It wakes us up and teaches us to listen and to truly hear.

What is God up to in our lives? What message is he trying to share with us?

Are the movements of our own heart heard? Can we discern our own deep longings?

Can we hear the heart behind the story shared with us by our friends and family?

Learn to practice silence. For a few moments turn off the noise and allow your soul to breathe.

Admittedly, this is much easier said than done.

Silence often forces us to face our shadow. When we are no longer habitually distracted by the noise, many of our unacknowledged issues will surface.

As such, the practice of silence is hard work. But with practice, our souls are renewed.

Silence opens our hearts to peace, beauty, and new life we would have missed otherwise.

Don’t let life be any louder than it has to be.

Discover new life and a renewed strength through the practice of silence.
