There’s a time to walk away from unhealthy people and situations. We don’t have to let others rob us of God’s best for our life. But the one person we cannot walk away from is our self. Wherever we go, there we are.

It’s tempting to believe others are the cause of our frustrations in life and that they’re the ones holding us back. If we could just get free of them then our life would be so much better.

For instance, we might leave our hometown, search for another job, or seek the promise of a new relationship.

And many times these are good moves and we can have a fresh start in life.

But often we find ourselves dealing with the same issues only now with new faces in a different location.

Whenever we find ourselves dealing with the same situations and the same kinds of people we must remember we’re the one constant throughout our life and relationships.

Wherever we go, there we are. We cannot escape ourselves.

And this is good news.

Because we take ourselves with us wherever we go, we don’t have to wait on others to change. As we grow into the best version of ourselves we can fundamentally shift our life and relationships for the better.

To be sure, there are many moments in which it’s still good to leave. But perhaps more often than not, our best first step is working on ourselves.

This gives us the freedom to profoundly shape the situations of our life as we intentionally move them towards God’s best.

On the other hand, we engage in mere wishful thinking when we believe we can run far enough away from our problems.

Remember – wherever you go, there you are. Change starts with the man in the mirror.
