Callings disrupt by their very nature. We are called out of business as usual and invited into another world of being. But if we’re too busy or distracted to listen, we might miss where God is leading us next.

Occasionally, we expect a call and wait patiently to receive it. But often calls are unpredictable.

As we’re going about our daily life, a friend might call to catch up or a marketer with the latest and greatest service to sell.

We might choose to take the call or not, but there’s a brief disruption in our day either way. Something calls for our attention and we must choose how to respond.

After too many calls with empty promises, we might be reluctant to pick up the phone again and instead stay busy with whatever task at hand.

But sometimes God calls us through unexpected ways.

Certain things might irritate us or make us mad and these are often useful clues to a call in our life.

Likewise, certain things might fascinate us and we can’t seem to get it out of our mind. While our fascinations might make for an “unproductive” day, they might also reveal a call God is trying to get us to pay attention to.

Divine callings do not always come as a burning bush.

We must spend time to listen and prayerfully discern the disruptions in our life.

Some calls are not for us and are truly distractions keeping us from where God is leading.

At the same, our addiction to busyness and maintaining the status quo can also keep us from hearing the new path God is calling us to.

Disruptions are God’s ringtones. Don’t let busyness and sticking to your well-made plans silence where God is calling you next.
