It’s enticing to keep up with the latest trends and developing current events. It feels good to be in the know. But we miss the rest of life unless we’re also willing to live beyond the trends.

Certainly, there’s nothing wrong with staying informed and knowing the latest developments.

In fact, this can be a gift for some – staying on top of the breaking news in order to bring relevant information back to others.

But, for most of us, trying to keep up with the trending thoughts and events of our day leaves much undone in the rest of life.

Our attention is so arrested to what is urgent and breaking that we miss the important and meaningful.

We must regularly check to ensure we’re not lost in the world of the trendy – going beyond simply reasonably informed.

Practicing the discipline of silence is a good start. Turning off the noise for a time exposes our addiction and allows us to reset our priorities.

Of course, pride plays a part in our habits as well. We don’t like feeling out of touch and so we strive to keep our finger on the pulse of all that’s happening.

Living beyond the trends means adopting a new definition of the good life and keeping our attention focused on what matters the most.

No longer do we have to be the one in the know about the latest unfolding drama around us. And, to be sure, this might exclude us from many conversations.

But it also frees us to enjoy the million little things that fill our hearts and make life worth living.

What’s trending changes daily and we miss the depth and meaning our souls crave when we try to keep up with it all.

Live beyond the latest trends and discover a deeper joy and lasting peace.
