Some days you just don’t feel like doing the work. You want to take the day off, call in sick, play hooky – or do anything else but the work in front of you.

We’ve all been there. But the mark of a mature man, is the one who shows up and does the work anyway.

This is a similar difference between being a professional and being an amateur.

An amateur does the work when it is fun, and the benefits greatly outweigh the cost. However, when sacrifices are needed, the amateur takes the day off until things can be exciting again.

On the other hand, the professional does the work even when it is not fun, and the cost are high. The professional is willing to endure many sacrifices because the work matters – their contribution to others is worth the cost.

As men, there may be many days when we do not feel like being patient and kind to others or offering our strength yet again without gratitude. There are days when we just want to be lazy and not have to worry about anyone else but ourselves.

We’ve all been there. Show up anyway.

Show up and offer your strength time and time and time again, not because you feel like it, or because you will be seen, but because your strength matters.

And nothing is wasted.

Each time we show up a seed is planted –  the hope of creating a life full of beauty and goodness.

And though the fruit of our efforts are rarely seen immediately, in time the harvest comes and it is worth every cost.

Don’t be the amateur of manhood, be the professional.

Keep showing up and bringing more life and goodness into the world around you.
